Filament (Buddy Mondlock)
CHORUS
The spotlight couldn’t pin her down
She burned brighter
Radio tubes couldn’t hold her sound
She burned brighter
Stars just fell in the river and drowned
She burned brighter
That was me in the wings
I couldn’t see that a filament is a fragile thing
She had talent from an early age
The little girl who sang everyone off the stage
She got groomed and she got signed
Did she mind?
No one thought to ask her at the time
But…(CHORUS)
Two hit records and a world tour
A bad girl image the artiste du jour
I got hired on to mind the road
Make sure she showed
So everybody got what they were owed
But…(CHORUS)
She came to me once in Amsterdam
Makeup running she just took my hand
Kissed me hard and said my name
All that pain
Looking for an eye in the hurricane
The ambulance came to a stop
She burned brighter
Flashbulbs flickered, fried and popped
She burned brighter
The sun came up and my heart dropped
She burned brighter
That was me in the wings
I couldn’t see that a filament is a fragile thing
A filament is a fragile thing
A filament is a fragile thing

Perfect (Buddy Mondlock)
When I wake up next to you
I feel a little shy
Feel shy when I wake up
I’ll tell you why
When I wake up next to you
And I see you lying there
With your arm above your head
And your morning hair
You look perfect
to me
You look perfect
to me
When you look into the mirror
Don’t make that frowny face
When you see another year
Around your waist
‘Cause every year with you
Is a year that’s made of gold
The way you feel in my arms
Never gets old
You look perfect
to me
You look perfect
to me
And when we fall asleep
We’re close as we can be
Then later in my dream
It’s you I see
And you look perfect
to me
You look perfect
to me
You look perfect

Jackson Petty

Jackson Petty (Buddy Mondlock)
The sun comes up like the sky is bleeding
Then it’s all soaked up into the corn
A Missouri dawn the Year of Our Lord
Eighteen sixty four
Yesterday the soldiers showed up
At the Taylor place just down the road
They took three cows and all the horses
And the Taylor boy thirteen years old
Lie down in the corn, Jackson Petty
Do like your father told you to
For the soldiers will come
Taking every father’s son
And children bleed just like the grown men do
Jackson Petty wakes from a dream of summer
Fifty years ago but fresh in his mind
When the horses hooves beat the field to ruin
But the soldiers did not find him
When they rode away the barn was burning
And his father laid out in the sun
He did not forget the sound of his own scream
He did not forget what war had done
Lie down in the corn, Jackson Petty
Do like your father told you to
For the soldiers will come
Taking every father’s son
And children bleed just like the grown men do
But that was long ago - now it’s nineteen fifteen
And the call goes out to fight the Hun
And in the fever dream Jackson saw the soldiers
Come for his own son
The vision drives him to his pistol
Crazy from the wound that never healed
Out into the corn - then a shot rings out
And Jackson lies down in the field
Lie down in the corn, Jackson Petty
Do like your father told you to
For the soldiers will come
Taking every father’s son
And fathers bleed just like their children do

Sunlight In My Pocket

Sunlight In My Pocket (Buddy Mondlock)
I got sunlight in my pocket
My baby put it there
So I can have a little summer
To keep my hands warm in the freezing air
She knows it’s cold where I’m going
Out in the cruel world
But you will not find me shivering
You’ll find me burning for my Georgia girl
I got stardust on my hat brim
It fell out of the sky
that stuff collects around my baby
She was standing next to this lucky guy
Yes I got the winning ticket
Boys, you never know
When that good angel you gave up on
Will just start smiling on you down below
This world ain’t put here just to suit me
That’s a lesson and a half
But all the bitter disappointments
Disappear when I hear my baby laugh
That’s the sound that says she’s happy
I can go there with her too
I got everything to win boys
And a head full of the blues to lose
That’s the moon over my shoulder
Burning up the night
So I can see just where I’m going
Every step it takes to make it home alright
You know, that moon is just reflecting
Light from some other place
I think it’s coming from my baby
You should see the way she lights up my face
I got sunlight in my pocket
I got stardust on my hat brim
That’s the moon over my shoulder
Burning for my Georgia girl

The Woman In the Window

The Woman In the Window (Richard Berman/Buddy Mondlock)
The woman in the window is standing there again
Countless times I've seen her walking home at my day's end
I don't know what she's thinking, I wonder what she sees
Is she looking through the pane of glass or through her memories
A young girl sitting on a stoop is called in by her mother
A couple 'neath the street lamp all wrapped up in each other
A jet plane crawls across the sky and leaves a vapor trail
It's beacons blinking on and off as the light begins to fail
Call me home lover
Catch my fall angel
Take me in stranger
A picture in a frame is hanging in the room
How often does she look back at the handsome bride and groom?
So many years, so many thresholds crossed
The woman in the window knows what’s gained and what’s been lost
Call me home lover
Catch my fall angel
Take me in stranger
(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK)
Call me home lover
Catch my fall angel
Take me in stranger
The woman in the window is looking back at me
The past is always present, so many memories
But now she disappears as I turn up the walk once more
The woman in the window is standing in our door

Come Back First

Come Back First (Buddy Mondlock)
Two red tail lights are all that I see
When I remember the last time you drove away from me
You drove away and you didn’t come back
Two red tail lights fade to black
You been here and you been gone
Then here again and so on
Sorrow and relief - I don’t know which is worse
But if you want to leave again you gotta come back first
CHORUS
Come back first
Come back last
Hey, you could just stay and save all that gas
But I’m your love
Then I’m your curse
So if you want to leave again you gotta come back first
I keep looking at the kitchen door
And three Cheerios on the floor
The clock just stopped - no, there it goes
When did a second get so slow?
All in all it’s all a mess
And I’m just trying to do my best
You might feel sweet, you might feel hurt
But if you want to leave again you gotta come back first
CHORUS
Come back first
Come back last
Hey, you could just stay and save all that gas
But I’m your love
Then I’m your curse
So if you want to leave again you gotta come back first
If you want to leave again you gotta come back first
Two red tail lights are all that I see
When I remember the last time you drove away from me
You drove away and you didn’t come back
Two red tail lights fade to black

Ticket Taker Blues (Buddy Mondlock)
CHORUS
Everybody’s going somewhere
To me it’s all goodbyes and passing throughs
Then I send ‘em down the line
Sometimes I wish those bags were mine
I’ve got a hard case of the ticket taker blues
I know every route and every schedule inside out
I can point you were you want to go
But at my feet these tickets stubs are scattered all about
Like the tails torn off of dreams I’ll never know
(CHORUS)
One time I thought this woman saw the distance in my eyes
She asked me if I’d like to come away
For a second there I almost bagged it all and hit the sky
But then she laughed and it just seemed best to stay
(CHORUS)
For as long as I remember this is all I’ve ever done
It’s my job and I’m good at what I do
But someone told me once that you could fly into the sun
And I’d sure like to find out if it’s true
(CHORUS)
TAG
When I send ‘em down the line
Sometimes I wish those bags were mine
I’ve got a hard case of the ticket taker blues

Weak

Weak (Nick Tibbs/Buddy Mondlock)
Weak
Nobody wants to look weak
For death shall inherit the meek
And I am the meanest ground pounder
Downtowner
Town downer
Weak
Sixteen weeks and sixteen days
From boot camp to a pink haze
Where the staff sergeant used to be
As he waved us back from an IED
Where a mortar’s just a random act
Like a haircut or a joke you crack
Now I’m the one who kicks down doors
You kids there, get down on the floor
Weak
Nobody wants to look weak
For death shall inherit the meek
And I am the meanest ground pounder
Downtowner
Town downer
Weak
And then they just rotate you home
You muster out, you’re all alone
Your buddy bought it in Iraq
And you’re guilty cause you made it back
But the VA’s gonna fix you up
Just swallow these pills in this cup
Back from the land of us and them
Giving Oxy out like M&Ms
Weak
Nobody wants to look weak
For death shall inherit the meek
And I am the meanest ground pounder
Downtowner
Town downer
Weak
So is this a problem? Nah, man, no
I can handle it I’m in control
I’m either high or I’m sick
Either way I’m out of it
And if the Oxy’s getting thin
I can score some heroin
Then some cop kicks down the door
And I’m the one who’s on the floor
(INSTRUMENTAL BREAK)
Three days in then out on bail
Re-arrested back in jail
There’s a program if you plead
There’s what you want or what you need
Now I speak
I sit in this circle and speak
Where nobody thinks I’m a freak
‘Cause I’m not the only wall climber
Less blinder
Day at a timer
I speak
I speak

Problem Solved (Kent Maxson/Buddy Mondlock)
God bless you Our Lady of Anesthesia
You’re always there when I really need ya
I love you and I hate you so
But you’ll be with me when its time to go
Life is fine in your domain
Where nothing’s lost and nothings gained
For gains will just get lost again
Yes, life is good if you pretend.
A note on the table that’s how I was told
As the bacon burned and the eggs got cold
She’d had enough of whatever we were
Seems she didn’t love me but we both loved her
Orange juice is good with breakfast and vodka
And every sad song by Frank Sinatra
An hour went by, then went by again
As me, not us finally sunk in
CHORUS:
Then it all slowed down as time collapsed
And now just crawled into the past
The future waited uninvolved
Then finally left, problem solved
So you tell me that she broke your heart
You can feel the damn thing fall apart
Is this how love’s supposed to work?
And what have I got to kill the hurt
Be careful when you make a wish
Sometimes the easy way’s a bitch
I envy you, that might sound dumb
But at least you feel something, I’m just numb
CHORUS:
See it all slowed down as time collapsed
And now just crawled into the past
The future waited uninvolved
Then finally left, problem solved
Problem solved
Problem solved

The Dark

|

The Dark (Guy Clark/Buddy Mondlock)
In the dark you can sometimes hear your own heart beat
Or the heart of the one next to you
The house settles down after holding itself up all day
Shoulders slump and it gives a big sigh
And you hear no one's foot fall in the hall
The drip in the kitchen sink marking time
June bug on the window screen
He can't get in but he keeps trying
One way or another we're all in the dark
Fireflies, sparks, lightning, stars
Campfires, the moon, headlights on cars
The northern lights, the Milky Way
You can't see that stuff in the day!
When the earth turns it's back on the sun
The stars all come out and the planets start to run around
They call that "day is done"
But really it's just getting started
Some folks take comfort in that
And how dark is it?
It's too dark for goblins
How dark is it?
It's so dark you can smell the moon
How dark is it?
It's so dark the wind gets lost
How dark is it?
It's so dark the sky's on fire!
How dark is it?
It's so dark you can see Fort Worth from here…
